Tuition Options (2014 rates)

  • A MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME - A 10-week commitment. The aim is to establish the habit of regular writing on a particular project; to develop confidence through positive feedback, and to bring the writer to the place of benefitting from creative critical feedback. The writer-mentor relationship will start with a detailed questionnaire, followed by discussion, the choice of a writing project and the setting of weekly goals. At least 3-5 pages of writing will be submitted each week and feedback be given. There will be three face-to-face, phone or Skype chats.     R3 500
  • ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING - (face to face) - in journalism, non-fiction writing, copy-editing and writing craft. Weekly sessions for an hour and a half at R350 each. Recommended: 5-10 sessions
  • "WRITING CALLING"  - a self-help blog with input and seven exercises per week. The Aim is to guide a writer in to an established habit of "writing, writing, writing, every day something". This is progressive - go back to the first blog entry and work through one by one. www.writingcallingforyou.wordpress.com
  • KENILWORTH WRITING SCHOOL - a monthly, three-session writing morning

Time?   09h00 - 13h00
Bring your own snacks; coffee/tea on tap all day.
Cost?    R120.
Programme: Three sessions, as follows, times approximate:-
  1. 09h00: Sharing of general writing news and how projects are progressing.
  2. 09h45: A lecture on some aspect of writing - topic announced each month - followed by an exercise.
  3. 11h00: Quiet writing time on your own project or on suggested exericises.
  4. 12h00:  Reading and listening to one another's writings; giving and receiving affirming as well as creative critical feedback  (if a person asks for it).
  5. 13H00:  Closure. People are welcome to stay on and write for longer or to chat about their work.
  • LONGING TO WRITE - ON REQUEST OF A GROUP OF 3 OR MORE - A short workshop (9 hours) - with a group of five or more. Guidelines on overcoming obstacles to meaningful writing, understanding left brain/right brain interaction in creativity; developing the life-style of a writer; finding your writing genre; useful exercises for stimulating inspiration; where to from here: the value and how-to of setting up a companionable writing group. (R900)
  • MEMOIR-WRITING - ON REQUEST OF A GROUP OF 3 OR MORE - A short workshop (11 hours) - with a group of five or more. Input, notes, discussion on the values of writing memoirs, ways of gathering memories and material, helpful key exercises, forebears research resources, duplication and distribution of your completed memoir; where to from here: the value and how-to of setting up a companionable writing group. (R1 100)
  • THE HERO'S JOURNEY - ON REQUET OF A GROUP OF 3 OR MORE - A seminar (9 hours) - with a group of five or more. Input, discussion and exercises on archetypes and stages likely to be found in a fictional hero's journey type story, plus exploring yourself as the hero of your own story.  (R900)
  • THE ENNEAGRAM FOR WRITERS - ON REQUEST OF A GROUP OF 3 OR MORE - A seminar (9 hours) - with a group of five or more. Input, notes, exercises and discussions on what motivates people to act the way they do, and how a personality system can aid character understanding (in life-writing) and the crafting of believable characters (in fiction). (R900)
  • ONE ON ONE MENTORING (face to face) in journalism, non-fiction-writing, copy editing or narrative craft. One and a half hours a week at R350 a time. Suggested Duration: 5 - 10 sessions.
